Don Best ’81
Don Best is an alumni of MECA and wood sculptor of more than twenty years, based in Norway, Maine. His process is uniquely additive and subtractive, and includes both carving and attaching basswood components, and integrating shapes leftover from previous projects. The sculptures are finished with further carving, woodburning, and finally, acrylic wash and colored pencil to bring them to life. Each piece’s complex personality and gesture captures feelings of lightheartedness, sadness, joy, and humor, and asks us to consider our world through the eyes of wildlife and our closest animal companions.
